Rimfire Scope vs. Centerfire Scope: Parallax and Why It Matters

There is no such thing as rimfire glass. There is a parallax setting, a turret convention and a reticle choice — and once you know which of those you actually need, the label on the box stops mattering.

The short version

  • The real difference is parallax setting. Rimfire-labelled scopes are typically parallax-free around 50 yards; general-purpose scopes are usually set at 100 or 150.
  • Parallax error is not blur. It is the reticle appearing to move across the target when your head moves, which turns cheek weld into an accuracy variable.

There is no rimfire glass

Lenses do not know what cartridge is beneath them. Coatings, resolution, contrast, tube construction and tracking mechanisms are identical disciplines regardless of the rifle. Nothing about a .22 requires different optical engineering.

What a "rimfire" label usually indicates is a bundle of three choices made for short-range use:

  • Parallax set closer — commonly around fifty yards rather than a hundred or a hundred and fifty.
  • Turrets marked in a rimfire convention — often quarter-inch increments referenced to fifty yards.
  • Reticles with holdover marks compressed for a steep, short trajectory, sometimes calibrated to a nominal .22 LR load.

There is also, unhelpfully, a fourth thing the label often indicates: a lower price point and correspondingly cheaper glass, on the assumption that nobody demands much from a .22 optic. That assumption is wrong for anyone shooting rimfire seriously, and it is why some of the best rimfire setups wear scopes that were never marketed as rimfire scopes at all.

What parallax error actually is

A riflescope focuses the target image onto an internal plane. The reticle sits on a plane of its own. When those two coincide, the reticle and the target are effectively at the same optical distance, and the crosshair stays welded to the target no matter where your eye sits behind the scope.

When they do not coincide, moving your eye shifts the apparent relationship between them, and the reticle appears to slide across the target. That apparent movement is real aiming error, and it is repeatable rather than random — which means it does not average out over a group. It shows up as inconsistent point of impact that correlates with how you happened to be lying behind the rifle.

Parallax is not the same as focus

People frequently adjust an objective bell or side focus until the image looks sharpest and assume the job is done. Sharpness and parallax-free are close but not identical, and on some scopes the two settings differ noticeably. The reliable method is to set it by testing for reticle movement rather than by eye.

Testing your own scope in thirty seconds

You do not need to trust the specification. The test costs nothing:

  1. Rest the rifle solidly enough that it will not move — sandbags, a rest, or anything genuinely stable.
  2. Aim at a small aiming point at the distance you actually shoot.
  3. Without touching the rifle, move your head: up, down, left, right, within the usable eyebox.
  4. Watch the reticle relative to the aiming point.

If the crosshair stays glued to the target, parallax is correct for that distance and you can stop thinking about it. If it slides across the target as you move, you have parallax error — and the amount it slides is roughly the amount of aiming error you are carrying at that distance.

Repeat the test at each distance you shoot regularly. A fixed 50-yard parallax scope tested at 25 and again at 100 will usually show error at both — which is exactly the case for buying adjustment rather than committing to one distance.

The turret convention trap

The second real difference, and the one that costs people an afternoon rather than a fraction of an inch.

Centerfire scopes are almost universally marked in true angular units — quarter-MOA or tenth-mil clicks. Many rimfire-marketed scopes instead use a linear convention referenced to fifty yards, typically a quarter of an inch per click at that distance. Because a minute of angle is roughly an inch at a hundred yards, a quarter-inch-at-fifty click is approximately half an MOA — double the value you would assume from the number on the cap.

The failure mode is predictable: you compute a correction the centerfire way, overshoot by a factor of two, correct back the other way, overshoot again, and conclude the scope does not track.

The fix is a box test: fire a group, dial a known number of clicks in one direction, fire again, dial back, fire again. Measure what actually happened on paper and work out what a click is worth on your rifle at your distance. Write the number on tape inside the scope cap and never think about it again.

The single recommendation that survives every case: adjustment beats a label. A scope with a working adjustable objective or side focus is correct at 25 yards, correct at 100, and correct on a magnum rimfire next year, whereas a fixed-parallax scope is a commitment to one distance for the life of the optic.

And if you already own a centerfire scope you were planning to retire, test it first. If its parallax adjustment reaches down to rimfire distances, it is very likely better glass than an equivalently priced rimfire-branded scope — and there is no recoil on a .22 to trouble it.
