Barrel Break-In & Seasoning: Myth, Ritual or Real?
Two entirely different ideas get filed under the same heading, and conflating them is why so much barrel break-in advice contradicts itself. One is about smoothing a new barrel. The other is about coating any barrel. Rimfire cares far more about the second.
The short version
- Break-in and seasoning are two different things. Break-in is a one-time procedure meant to smooth a new barrel. Seasoning is the ongoing fouling layer that a rimfire barrel needs in order to shoot its best, and it re-establishes every time you clean.
- Centerfire break-in procedures do not transfer. They exist to manage copper jacket fouling on tool marks in a new barrel. Rimfire fires soft lead with a wax lubricant, which is a different problem entirely.
- The observable effect is real and repeatable. Strip a rimfire bore to bare steel and the first rounds afterwards usually group worse until the layer re-establishes.
- The useful action is to find your barrel's number. How many fouling shots it takes to settle is specific to your rifle, and knowing it is worth more than any break-in ritual.
Two ideas, one confusing name
Almost every argument about barrel break-in is people talking past each other, because two unrelated propositions share a label.
Break-in is a procedure performed once on a new barrel, typically involving a prescribed sequence of single shots and cleanings. The stated goal is to smooth the microscopic tool marks left by manufacturing before fouling has a chance to build into them permanently.
Seasoning is not a procedure at all. It is the condition a barrel settles into after a number of rounds, in which the bore carries a stable layer of deposits and shoots consistently. It is undone by cleaning and re-established by shooting, over and over, for the life of the barrel.
The rimfire evidence for the second is strong and easy to observe. The case for the first, in rimfire specifically, is much weaker.
What centerfire break-in is actually for
The centerfire rationale is coherent on its own terms. A jacketed bullet is copper travelling very fast against steel, and a new barrel's surface carries tool marks from cutting or buttoning the rifling. Copper deposits into those marks; the deposits give subsequent copper something to grip; fouling accelerates. The break-in ritual aims to interrupt that cycle by removing copper before it can compound while the sharpest edges wear smooth.
Whether it works is contested even among centerfire shooters, and modern barrels with better finishes make the argument weaker than it was decades ago. But the mechanism is at least a real mechanism.
None of it describes a rimfire. A .22 LR bullet is soft lead or thinly plated lead, travelling far slower, carrying a wax or polymer lubricant applied at the factory. It does not deposit copper into tool marks because there is very little copper and not much velocity to drive it. The problem the procedure solves does not meaningfully exist here.

What seasoning is in a rimfire
The mechanism is not fully settled, and anyone claiming otherwise is overstating the case. The most commonly offered explanation is that the lubricant and lead deposits fill and smooth the microscopic irregularities of the bore surface, producing a more uniform and repeatable passage for each bullet. A bare steel bore is rougher and, crucially, changes shot to shot as the first deposits go down unevenly.
What is not in dispute is the observation. Deep-clean a rimfire barrel back to bare metal and the first rounds afterwards frequently group worse than the rounds fired before cleaning, with the groups tightening as the count builds and then stabilising. This is consistent enough that competitive smallbore and benchrest shooters plan their cleaning around it as a matter of routine — either cleaning rarely, or cleaning and then deliberately firing a known number of fouling shots before anything is scored.
How to test it on your own rifle
You do not have to take anyone's word for this. The test is straightforward, though it consumes an afternoon and a couple of boxes of ammunition.
- Shoot a baseline. Several groups from a front rest and rear bag, with one lot of ammunition, on a calm day. Five-shot groups minimum; three-shot groups prove nothing.
- Deep clean the bore. Properly, back toward bare metal, with a bore guide and a one-piece coated rod.
- Shoot groups continuously afterwards, recording each one in order. Do not clean again, do not change ammunition, and do not adjust anything.
- Plot group size against round count. Where it stops improving is your barrel's number.
- Write it down and keep it with the rifle. That number is the useful output of the entire exercise.
Two cautions. Shoot enough groups that one flyer does not decide the answer, and do this in stable conditions — a shifting wind will mask the effect entirely at any distance beyond fifty yards.
What to do with a new rimfire
The practical answer is short: shoot it.
- Skip the elaborate shoot-one-clean-one procedure. The mechanism it addresses is a centerfire mechanism, and each cleaning cycle takes a rod through a new bore for no clear benefit — which carries its own small risk to the crown and the throat.
- Check the bore before the first shot. New rifles sometimes ship with preservative or packing residue in the barrel. A patch or two to remove it is worthwhile.
- Expect the first hundred rounds or so to be unrepresentative. A new barrel is also settling in, the action is bedding down, and screws are finding their torque. Judging accuracy from the first box is premature.
- Check action screws after the first few sessions. This does more for accuracy on a new rifle than any break-in ritual, and almost nobody does it.
- Test ammunition once it has settled. Which lot your barrel prefers is the single largest accuracy variable available to you, and it cannot be determined until the barrel is behaving consistently.
Inspect the crown on a new rifle. A poorly finished or nicked crown is a manufacturing defect, it is the single most accuracy-critical surface on the barrel, and it is far easier to raise as a warranty matter in the first weeks than after a thousand rounds. Look for an even, unblemished edge all the way round the muzzle.
When to deliberately break the seasoning
Seasoning is not a reason never to clean a bore. There are four occasions where a deep clean is the right call, and knowing them is the practical half of this subject.
- Accuracy has genuinely degraded and you have already ruled out the mount, the action screws, the ammunition lot and yourself. Eventually the deposits stop being a smooth layer and start being a problem.
- Before long-term storage, because leaving lead, carbon and wax in a bore for years is a corrosion risk rather than an accuracy one.
- When switching ammunition types deliberately, particularly between conventional lubricated lead and polymer-coated ammunition. The residue they leave differs, and a clean baseline makes the comparison honest.
- After shooting anything unusual — a lot of a very different type, or ammunition of unknown provenance and age.
In every case, plan for the recovery. If you clean before a match, fire your barrel's number of fouling shots first. If you clean the night before a hunt, either shoot it in or accept that your zero is not confirmed.
Claims that do not hold up
- "You must never clean a rimfire barrel." Overcorrection. The argument is about frequency and technique, not about abstinence, and it applies to the bore only — the chamber, bolt face and action need regular attention regardless, because that is a reliability matter.
- "Break-in permanently improves a barrel's accuracy." No evidence supports this in rimfire, and the mechanism proposed for centerfire does not apply to soft lead at rimfire velocities.
- "Fouling always improves accuracy, so more is better." Only up to a plateau. Deposits continue to accumulate after the accuracy benefit has saturated, and eventually they cause problems — particularly at the chamber, where a carbon ring interferes with how the cartridge seats.
- "A barrel needs a thousand rounds before it shoots." Conflates settling of the whole rifle with the fouling layer, which typically establishes in a much smaller number of rounds.
- "Match ammunition seasons a barrel better." A barrel prefers whatever it prefers, and that is a property of the specific barrel and lot. There is no evidence that a fouling layer laid down by expensive ammunition is superior.
The single defensible takeaway from this entire topic: clean the bore rarely and deliberately, clean the action regularly, and know how many shots your barrel needs to come back.

Does seasoning apply to the .17 magnum rimfires too?
To a lesser and less predictable degree. Those cartridges use jacketed or plated bullets rather than bare lubricated lead, so the fouling character sits somewhere between rimfire and centerfire behaviour. The prudent approach is the same either way: test your own rifle after a deep clean and find out how it actually behaves rather than assuming.
Should I clean my rifle before a competition?
Only if you know your barrel's fouling-shot number and have time to fire them before anything is scored. Cleaning the night before a match and arriving with a bare bore is a well-known way to lose points in the first stage. Most competitive smallbore shooters either clean well in advance or do not clean the bore at all during a season.
Can a fouling layer ever become a problem?
